Surfing in Costa Rica
The
beautiful waves in front of Encanta La Vida, in
Cabo Matapalo, are a surfers dream. Our remote location means most
surfers get off the bus at Jaco and don't make it this far. Just surfers
in the know.
Situated on the extreme tip of the Osa Peninsula, Matapalo offers the
extreme adventurer with an opportunity to witness one of the few
untouched pristine regions in Costa Rica. Combine dense jungles,
breathtaking beaches, world class surfing in a peaceful, remote
community. From the lodge you can walk to any of
the breaks. We watch the swell from the tower.
Matapalo offers three excellent point breaks that will make any
surfer unpack and stay awhile:
Playa Matapalo: Excellent right point. This offers the
best and most exciting surfing. Bigger than any other break in the area
but also rockier. On normal conditions waves are up to 7 feet.
Back Wash: Excellent right, breaks when Matapalo is
big. Best at low tide. Nice beach break at low tide with a fast and
steep wave. On normal conditions it is very safe but big swells get up
to 10 feet.
Pan Dulce: Point break with a right. On a normal swell,
the inside break is a small nice wave to learn how to surf. On the
outside break you can find the point break and with big swell you can
surf it all the way to the shore. Almost one and a half minute surfing
the same wave.
We also load the boat when the swell is good across the bay and
surf Pavones, Punta Blanco and Punta Burica.
Pavones: Excellent left point, considered one of the
longest in the world at 2/3 of a mile. It starts at a point, then
crosses a river mouth, then hits another left point, and goes into a 500
yard bay. It works best with a South swell, usually between April and
October the waves can go off for over a week consistently. Surf the day
at Pavones - then avoid the local riff raff, pack up and head back to
Matapalo.
Punta Blanco: Reef breaks with rights and lefts.
Punta Burica: Powerful waves - not well known.
